Every flooring type, decoded

Eighteen material categories with the technology behind them, honest performance ratings, current installed price ranges and the situations each one is genuinely built for. Filter, sort, then open any product for the deep dive. Covering several rooms with one product? Filter by the requirements of the most demanding one — or let the Floor Finder weigh them together.

Two ways to narrow it down. Family groups by how a product is built, which is what determines how it behaves. Look groups by appearance, which cuts straight across those families — wood-look spans real timber, laminate, vinyl plank and porcelain plank alike.

Common questions

Choosing between flooring types

The core. Laminate is a printed decorative layer under a melamine wear surface bonded to a high-density fiberboard core, which swells irreversibly if water reaches the seams. LVP is vinyl over a rigid stone-plastic (SPC) or foamed wood-plastic (WPC) core containing no organic material, so it cannot swell or rot. Laminate has the harder surface and resists scratching slightly better; LVP is genuinely waterproof. For a bathroom or basement the answer is LVP.

Porcelain tile, terrazzo and polished concrete top the durability scale, and all three effectively last the life of the building. Among practical residential options, porcelain rated PEI Class 4 or 5 is the most durable, followed by AC4 laminate and 20 mil SPC vinyl. Durability is not the same as appearance retention: grout and finish need attention long before the material fails.

Six materials on this site are unaffected by water: SPC and WPC vinyl plank, sheet vinyl, porcelain tile, terrazzo and epoxy. Sheet vinyl with heat-welded seams and an integral coved base is the most waterproof assembly at a domestic price, because it has no grout and effectively turns the room into a basin. Note that a waterproof plank does not make a waterproof floor — water can still travel through the seams to the subfloor.

Five families by construction: carpet and soft surface, wood and laminate, resilient and vinyl, tile and stone, and seamless specialty systems like terrazzo, polished concrete and epoxy. Appearance is a separate axis — wood-look, for example, spans real timber, laminate, vinyl plank and porcelain plank, which is why this site lets you filter by family and by look independently.
